Walmart Foundation Helps Catholic Charities Fight Food Insecurity
Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton was a recipient of a grant in the amount of $40,000 from the Walmart Foundation to perform outreach, education and enrollment assistance to residents in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties interested in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This is the second year Burlington Community Services received the grant and in 2014, used the grant to provide outreach and education to 425 individuals. Of those, 242 were provided with enrollment assistance and 236 of those received SNAP benefits. The 2015 goals of this grant are to expand outreach, provide enrollment assistance to 320 and achieve SNAP benefits for 300.
This grant, provided through Catholic Charities USA, will enable Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton to expand its efforts to educate families about SNAP and provide eligible families with enrollment assistance.
According to data from Foodshare, SNAP is one of the most effective and efficient ways to end hunger in our state. This critical program provides many needy individuals with the ability to provide nutritious and healthy meals to their families. Unfortunately, a large number of families eligible for this benefit are not aware of this critical resource. Support from the Walmart Foundation will help Catholic Charities to close this gap through outreach and enrollment assistance.
