Volunteers needed in Ocean County to assist elderly during COVID-19 quarantine

The coronavirus crisis has made it challenging for our Fix It program in Ocean County to continue operating as usual.

Fix It is a Community Services program in which volunteers visit the homes of senior citizens in Ocean County to perform minor home repairs and chores.

But Fix It volunteers tend to be older adults too – and older adults (and people of any age with serious underlying medical conditions) might be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19, according to the CDC. Because of social-distancing mandates, we also want to avoid putting either clients or volunteers at unnecessary risk by entering homes.

From fixing to food

But we do want to keep helping Ocean County’s seniors! So until the coronavirus crisis passes, we plan to instead ensure they get groceries and other essential items, so seniors can avoid the health risk of navigating crowded grocery stores for daily necessities.

For this, we need volunteers. Volunteers should be willing to respond to Community Services-Ocean’s office at 200 Monmouth Ave. in Lakewood and make deliveries throughout Ocean County. Further, we ask if you’re part of the high-risk demographic identified by the CDC, please stay home! You can help us after this crisis ends.
