“Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.”

-St. Teresa of Ávila

Dear Friends,

When I think back to the Christmases of my childhood, I am warmed by cherished memories – lighting candles on an Advent wreath, helping cook holiday meals and wrapping gifts. Yet, my heart goes out at this time of year to the families in our community who may not be able to create special memories because they are struggling to keep a roof overhead and meals on the table.

Last year, homelessness in New Jersey rose 17%. Currently, there are more than 2,500 homeless individuals within our diocese. Our Community Services team participated in the Point in Time Count in January and encountered families living in rundown motels, on the streets and even in cars. Because they have witnessed these hardships firsthand and listened to the heart-wrenching stories, our team works tirelessly to prevent evictions and advocates for more affordable housing.

This year, a record number of families have turned to our food pantries for assistance. One regular visitor is a single mother working two jobs who is unable to afford groceries for her sons. Many of our senior citizens face an impossible choice between purchasing prescriptions or buying food. Without our pantries, they would go hungry.

Thanks to your generous support, we can keep our shelves stocked and ensure that no one has to go without a meal. It is this kindness of neighbors helping neighbors that makes a world of difference within our diocese.
